EMDR Therapy and Burnt Quesadillas with Zach - Therapy Roulette (106)

8/25/2021

Michele admits she needs to take better care of herself. She mentions that finding and sharing dark content memes may be helpful if you’re feeling, well, depressed and alone.
Today's guest is Zach, a wise zoomer who tells us about his experience with EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) therapy. EMDR is most commonly sought out by people with PTSD, anxiety, and panic disorders. Zach shares his experience with group therapy and CBT (Cognitive Behavioral Therapy) as well.
Zach explains that burning a quesadilla should not make you feel like a failure. He tells us that he considers himself more of a millennial since he grew up with ‘90’s TV shows.  They talk about setting and reaching therapy goals. Zach tells us his methods for determining whether a therapist is a good fit. They discuss how narcissists project their own insecurities, using avoidance as a coping mechanism, and finding affordable therapy. He also tells us he finds all the good memes on Instagram, but otherwise doesn’t spend much time on social media. They discuss the toxicity of social media and Zach theorizes that social media is fostering a dopamine addiction in us all. Zach says that if he became the president tomorrow, he would prioritize making sure that mental health is better addressed in schools.
Talking Points:
  • EMDR Therapy
  • Self-Care
  • PTSD
  • Anxiety
  • Panic Disorders
  • Group Therapy & CBT
  • Mental Health
  • The Toxicity of Social Media
  • Pop Culture Television
Top 3 Quotes:
  1. “Otis Roffman writes, though by no means a solution for mental illness, humor is an effective coping strategy for pain. Someone might see a meme accurately describing a feeling they struggle with and realize they aren't alone.” (6:00)
  2. “I think health care and mental health are our two big things that don't get advocated enough in today's society.” (26:10)
  3. “That's like, the reason why people don't just go to therapy, and why there's such a high statistic of people going there only when they're feeling suicidal, or like having a crisis, they went through something that they can't, they can't handle on their own. Because it's really hard to set your own goal.” (22:52)
MOTIVATION
"I found that there's a lot of good press around depressing memes. Meaning that, if you find yourself depressed and sad, feel alone, looking up depressing memes might help you find a community of people who are also depressed, and that might make you feel less alone." (5:00)

Michele talks about her trip to Grand Canyon National Park. It started with a fight with her boyfriend, but it ended alright! She discusses how to talk politics with the person you’re dating and shares that she and Joseph got in an argument on their first date- about voting.
This week’s guest is Amanda, a writer and arts educator. Amanda laments how hard it is to find a therapist and how we should have access to emergency therapy. Michele reveals that she recently quit going to therapy herself. Amanda tells us what it’s like to have strong Trump supporters in her family when she considers herself very liberal. They talk about living in an age of pandemics, crying in public, the VP debate, mailing in your ballot, overconfident political YouTubers, AOC, and of course, Joe freaking Biden. Amanda recommends reading A People’s History of the United States by Howard Zinn.
Amanda tells us that her finances are actually faring better now in pandemic times, and about her recent experience interviewing for jobs while trying not to seem too desperate. She also recommends the book Severance by Ling Ma, as well as the Socrates Sculpture Garden in Queens, NY.

Talking Points:
  • Vacation
  • Dating
  • Writing
  • Therapy
  • Political Differences, Debating Politics, and Voting
  • Reading and Book Recommendations
  • Unemployment and Social Isolation in the Pandemic
  • Finances and Saving Money
  • What Not to Do in a Job Interview
Top 3 Quotes
  1. “If you're like business partners or friends, it's good to dedicate some time to understanding their perspective.” Another quote from the article, “While it may be easier for some couples to avoid conflict, constructive fighting that respects boundaries, and allows both individuals to express themselves can strengthen relationships and build trust,” says Shelley Galasso Bonanno.
  2. “Yeah, in New York, I feel like if you kick someone you think is dead, that's like the nicest thing you can do, like, call the police for, like a catatonic homeless person on the street.” (25:43)
  3. “I think a lot of this, like, ushers in a responsibility saying, if you are in a place of privilege, or if you're able to speak up, do so. That really comes into play in your real life in situations where it's uncomfortable, where you see someone who's not as privileged or not as like, maybe high up in a job position, or maybe like a homeless person, someone who's at least disadvantaged in some way, if you don't speak up and help them. I mean, that’s where you’re really doing the work.” (33:51)
MOTIVATION
“While it may be easier for some couples to avoid conflict, constructive fighting that respects boundaries, and allows both individuals to express themselves can strengthen relationships and build trust,” says Shelley Galasso Bonanno.

Is That Mask Suffocating Your Freedom? with Trevor Waggoner -Therapy Roulette (104)

7/8/2021

Michele gives some suggestions about how to talk to someone with differing political views. She shares a story about talking to a Trump supporter face to face.
This week’s guest is Trevor Waggoner, an improv and sketch comedian based in Los Angeles. He’s currently a part of a rotating cast on Manager's Special on Twitch. Trevor and Michele bond over the fact that they’ve both acted in TV court shows, but have no idea where to find the footage.
Trevor tells us about the political climate in Arizona and why he’s especially hopeful that the younger generation will flip the swing state for Biden. He talks about growing up in a predominantly Christian neighborhood, where people tend to vote Republican. He tells us why he’s not a fan of Arizona Governor Doug Ducey. Trevor and Michele also bond over having acid reflux and worrying whether the symptoms are related to COVID. They talk about not being stoked about Biden, but admitting we have to vote for him. He’ll probably be great anyway, who knows! They discuss the debates so far. Trevor tells us about a pilot he’s writing and what’s motivating him to write. He tells us what it was like to quarantine at home with his family in Arizona for six months. Michele asks Trevor whether any of his friendships have changed due to political disagreements. Trevor tells us a story about witnessing anti-maskers in public.
Talking Points:
  • Politics & Voting
  • Twitch
  • Television court shows
  • Acid Reflux
  • The 2020 Presidential Election
Top 3 Quotes
  1. “If you demand the conversation, it's not going to go well. You both have to be open minded, down to talk, and nonjudgmental. That's super important. So rather than demand the conversation, open yourself up and extend an invitation to talk, make sure the vibe is right, read the room. You can do this.” (2:05)
  2. “If you get into these conversations, and you feel triggered- when you feel fully triggered, and you feel like you can't take it anymore, then stop talking. Just pause. Walk away, you know that that's expected when you're getting into heated topics like this, you know, you're kind of debating. So if you get too risen, emotionally, just pause it. Only return to it when you feel like you can.” (6:12)
  3. “I know what you mean, there's a mesh. I feel like some people identify strongly with certain ideals, or they feel very much this way. And there's no room to budge. So that might be the old school version.” (19:43)
MOTIVATION
“…Extend an invitation to talk, make sure the vibe is right, read the room. You can do this.” (2:16)

Find a Therapist Who Will Speak Farsi to You with Shadia Sepehrnia – Therapy Roulette (103)

7/8/2021

Michele discusses race and ethnicity as it relates to therapy. She recommends therapy professionals bring up the subject of racial identity with their clients. She mentions a few things white therapists can do to help BIPOC clients especially. This week’s guest, Shadia Sepehrnia, tells us the comfort in finding a therapist who is Persian like her. She explains the ease of being able to describe things in Farsi. She discusses how her mother, who’s from Iran, doesn’t understand therapy. Shadia tells us what it’s like to return to therapy after a hiatus from it. She reveals that she is grateful to the pandemic for letting her catch a break from work, so she can figure out how she truly wants to spend her time. Shadia recommends the screenwriting book, Story by Robert McKee, which may be a type of therapy in and of itself!
Shadia talks about getting caught up in the hustle of Hollywood, and how it’s been nice to have the time to read SEVEN books since we entered quarantine! She also says that she watches zero network television these days, unless it’s 90 Day Fiancé. They also discuss whether staying on Facebook during election season is worth it. Michele asks where Shadia last traveled to before the pandemic. Michele then asks Shadia how her writing/directing career is going.
Talking Points:
  • Race and Ethnicity
  • Therapy
  • Free Time & Books
  • Popular Reality Television
  • Facebook
  • Traveling
  • Writing
  • Hollywood & Directing
Top 3 Quotes
  1. “What I thought was really interesting, the article says, ‘As you begin to address race-based experiences in therapy, explore not just cross culturally, which means learning about a culture different from yours, but also multiculturally, which means learning about systems of power, privilege and oppression and their impact related to social group identity. This will also be important to do for your clients’ reference group identities, such as ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation, social class, immigration status, veteran status, religion, and other identities that might be important to that individual.’” (4:23)
  2. “…when you talk to family, you're almost in a way, at least I am. I'm worried like, I don't want to hurt their feelings. I don't want to change how they feel about me or see me. And so a lot of times you lose yourself. And I think therapy, and that's why it's, you know, it's part of self-care is like, well, this is just for me, and nobody else and no one else can take it away.” (19:59)
  3. “It's very brutal. And part of me is like, oh, maybe I shouldn't challenge myself and like, try to like, no, push myself to do this. But it just seems very exposing. Because when you're in a room with your therapist, you are exposed, but like with your mother, that's another level.” (30:50)
Motivation
  • "I think everything right now is taking on a different form. That’s what pandemic is, like everything like, I would have never like done half the things I’ve done. If it wasn't for the pandemic, like all the stuff that I've baked, the books that I've read, the things that I've written, like, these are things that have never would have happened.” (22:33)
